As per Section 8 (1) of the Lakshadweep
Panchayats Regulation 1994, with effect from such date as the Administrator
may, by notification, appoint in this behalf, there shall be constituted, a
Village (Dweep)Panchayat in
each island specified in the first schedule and a District Panchayat for the
entire territory.
A District Panchayat for the Union Territory of Lakshadweep was constituted for
the first time on 22.01.1998. The
present District Panchayat, which is the second has been
constituted on 22.01.2003.
The District Panchayat has a President
Cum Chief Counsellor and two
Vice President Cum Counsellors. It
has 22 directly elected members, 10 Chairpersons and the Member of the House of
People representing the territory as members.
The District Panchayat is implementing various Developmental
Schemes formulated by it as well as those transferred
from the developmental departments of the Lakshadweep Administration.
