As per
the Lakshadweep Panchayat Regulation, 1994 , the District Panchayat is empowered
to formulate and implement schemes for the economic and social developments of
the people of the islands, in addition to the implementation of various schemes
and activities transferred from the Departments of the Administration.
While the Schemes in Kavaratti island are directly implemented and
monitored by the District Panchayat, the Schemes in other islands are being
implemented with the involvement of the District Panchayat members of the island
by the Headmaster High School and the Executive Officer of the Village (Dweep)
Panchayat, who are appointed as the designated Officer and Officer in Charge of
the District Panchayat respectively.
Therefore, the schemes being implemented can be broadly categorised as Own Schemes and the Schemes Transferred from various Departments.
